Putting on the Mask

As we drove closer to the church, although I could wipe away my tears, I couldn’t wipe away the heavy blanket of anxiety, frustration, and regret that had settled upon my heart. As soon as the church door swung open and I was greeted by a smiling older man offering me a big ol’ Southern good-morning welcome, I knew what I had to do.

I quickly affixed the mask I had put on so many times before to hide the worries of my soul and the aches of my heart. I planted a plastic smile on my face and shook his hand, and when he asked how I was doing, I of course said, “Fine.”

The kids scampered off to their Sunday school classes and my husband and I walked to our own—in silence, I might add. We sat down in our usual chairs and shared idle chit-chat with a few fellow Sunday school members. Then someone opened up the floor for prayer requests, inviting everyone to share what was on their hearts or express any concerns they needed prayer for.

I had a plethora of prayer requests on the tip of my tongue, yet I remained silent. Instead of raising my hand, I raised up my guard and stared aimlessly at my lap, picking at a little string hanging on my skirt. I didn’t want people to know my entire morning had been a train wreck, I wasn’t speaking to my husband, and I had been harsh with my children in ways they really didn’t deserve. I didn’t want to ask them to pray for our marriage and admit we were having a hard time on many days, not just that day. I didn’t want to act like we needed prayer or confess we were going through some difficult times in several areas of our life.
